Safety tips

Phone chat is one of the more private ways to meet people — no photos, no profiles, no data trail. But the person on the other end is still a stranger. A few habits keep it that way until you decide otherwise.

Protect your identity

• The line never reveals your phone number — keep it that way. Don't recite it in a greeting or early conversation.
• Use a first name or a nickname. Skip your last name, employer, and street until real trust is built.
• Details add up. Your neighborhood + your job + your gym is enough to identify you. Share slowly.

Trust your ear

• Anyone who asks for money, gift cards, or "help with an emergency" is running a script. End the call.
• Someone pushing hard for personal details or off-line contact in the first minutes is a red flag, not enthusiasm.
• If a conversation turns uncomfortable, disconnect. You owe a stranger nothing — there's always another caller.

If you decide to meet

• First meetings happen in busy public places — coffee shop, restaurant, bar. Never a private home, yours or theirs.
• Get there and back on your own transportation.
• Tell a friend who you're meeting, where, and when — and check in after.
• Keep the first meeting short by design. If it's great, there's a second one.
